Air Impact Wrench Spins but Has Low Torque

Free speed can look normal while pressure collapses under load. Begin with external, reversible checks—air supply, hose, couplers, regulator, lubrication and socket—before internal service.

Stop and make safe

Disconnect the air supply and depressurize before changing sockets, clearing a jam or opening the tool. Stop using damaged hose, fittings, anvil or socket. Wear eye and appropriate hearing protection. For internal work, follow the exact service manual or use a qualified technician.

Do not “fix” low torque by exceeding the manufacturer’s rated inlet pressure. This can increase noise, wear and risk while masking the restriction.

Diagnostic order

  1. Confirm the symptom: use a known-good impact-rated socket and representative fastener; compare direction and power setting.
  2. Measure pressure under flow: a static gauge can read correctly until the trigger is pulled.
  3. Remove restrictions: inspect regulator capacity, filter loading, quick couplers, swivel fittings, hose ID/length and kinks.
  4. Verify compressor delivery: compare delivered SCFM at operating pressure with the tool’s loaded demand and concurrent users.
  5. Follow lubrication instructions: too little, wrong or contaminated lubricant can affect vane and impact performance; oil-free tools differ.
  6. Check air quality: drain water and service filters as specified.
  7. Escalate to internal inspection: worn vanes, seals, bearings or hammer components require model-specific service.

Why “it spins” is not proof

Free running imposes less load. A restrictive line may supply enough flow for RPM but not enough mass flow to sustain impacts. That is why the gauge location and measurement during trigger flow matter.
