Use this decision order: define the job and access envelope; select the correct tool and accessory interface; obtain the exact loaded or continuous air demand; then verify compressor output, hose, couplers, treatment and dynamic inlet pressure.

Do not rank tools from a single headline number. “Average air consumption” can assume intermittent use; loaded or continuous consumption is the safer compressor-sizing input for sustained work. Values differ by exact model and revision.

Compressor, hose and air-quality check
Demand rises with large bits, hard feed and repeated cycles. Correct speed, a sharp bit and suitable feed reduce heat and waste, but cannot compensate for inadequate compressor flow.
- Use delivered compressor CFM at the same stated pressure as the tool—not tank gallons, displacement or horsepower alone.
- Add tools that can run simultaneously and account for the real work cycle. Preserve capacity margin for sustained work.
- Confirm minimum hose inside diameter, total run length, coupler bore, regulator and filter capacity.
- Measure pressure at the tool inlet while it is operating. A static gauge can look correct while flow restriction causes a large drop.
- Drain moisture and follow the exact maker’s filtration and lubrication instructions.
Safety and stop-work limits
A drill can bind and rotate its body abruptly. Secure the work, use a supplied side handle where required and keep the operator out of the reaction path.
- Remove chuck keys before connecting or starting.
- Clamp the work and use sharp correctly rated bits.
- Disconnect before clearing swarf; keep hands from the bit.
