An air ratchet is primarily a speed tool for running threaded fasteners. Break seized fasteners with an appropriate hand or impact tool, run them with the ratchet, then apply final specified torque with a calibrated torque wrench.

Use this decision order: define the job and access envelope; select the correct tool and accessory interface; obtain the exact loaded or continuous air demand; then verify compressor output, hose, couplers, treatment and dynamic inlet pressure.

Compressor, hose and air-quality check

Some ratchet datasheets show modest average CFM but far higher air consumption under load. A small compressor may recover between isolated fasteners yet fall behind during repetitive production work.

  1. Use delivered compressor CFM at the same stated pressure as the tool—not tank gallons, displacement or horsepower alone.
  2. Add tools that can run simultaneously and account for the real work cycle. Preserve capacity margin for sustained work.
  3. Confirm minimum hose inside diameter, total run length, coupler bore, regulator and filter capacity.
  4. Measure pressure at the tool inlet while it is operating. A static gauge can look correct while flow restriction causes a large drop.
  5. Drain moisture and follow the exact maker’s filtration and lubrication instructions.

Safety and stop-work limits

Ratchets can react sharply when a fastener seats. Keep hands out of pinch points and do not brace the body where sudden movement can trap fingers.

  • Verify direction before applying air near adjacent components.
  • Discard worn sockets and damaged square drives.
  • Do not add a cheater bar or hand torque unless the maker explicitly permits it.
Stop work: Disconnect air before accessory changes or jam clearing. Remove any tool with a damaged throttle, guard, retainer, socket/accessory interface, hose or fitting from service.
