Quick answer

For most automotive shops, prioritize a controllable 1/2-inch impact wrench, compact 3/8-inch access tool, ratchet, blow gun used within applicable rules, tire inflator, die grinder and—where bodywork is performed—sanders. Size the air system for the highest credible simultaneous loaded demand, not a catalog’s average-consumption headline.

Mechanical service

Short, high-flow impact bursts plus moderate-flow ratchets and inflation. Recovery and point-of-use pressure matter.

Collision/body

Sanders and grinders can impose sustained flow. Dry, clean air and dust/noise controls become central.

Fleet service

Larger fasteners and simultaneous bays can require engineered distribution, larger hoses and heavy-duty tools.

If compressor output is stated only as horsepower, displacement or tank gallons, compatibility is still unknown. Obtain delivered SCFM at the relevant pressure. If more than one bay can trigger high-demand tools, model coincidence rather than simply adding every nameplate value or ignoring concurrency.
