A grinder must be selected as a system: tool, guard, mounting hardware and approved abrasive. More wheel or motor can increase removal rate while also increasing airflow demand and the consequence of a mismatch.

Do not rank tools from a single headline number. “Average air consumption” can assume intermittent use; loaded or continuous consumption is the safer compressor-sizing input for sustained work. Values differ by exact model and revision.

Compressor, hose and air-quality check

Treat grinding as sustained duty unless the work cycle proves otherwise. Large angle and vertical models can demand far more airflow than intermittent service tools; check pressure at the running inlet.

  1. Use delivered compressor CFM at the same stated pressure as the tool—not tank gallons, displacement or horsepower alone.
  2. Add tools that can run simultaneously and account for the real work cycle. Preserve capacity margin for sustained work.
  3. Confirm minimum hose inside diameter, total run length, coupler bore, regulator and filter capacity.
  4. Measure pressure at the tool inlet while it is operating. A static gauge can look correct while flow restriction causes a large drop.
  5. Drain moisture and follow the exact maker’s filtration and lubrication instructions.

Safety and stop-work limits

Abrasive overspeed, damage or incorrect guarding can cause catastrophic failure. Inspect wheel, mount and guard before use and follow the accessory maker’s mounting instructions.

  • Use eye and face protection; control sparks, dust and combustibles.
  • Never exceed accessory speed or remove a required guard.
  • Do not use a wheel with damage or unknown storage history.
Stop work: Disconnect air before accessory changes or jam clearing. Remove any tool with a damaged throttle, guard, retainer, socket/accessory interface, hose or fitting from service.
