Use delivered data—not horsepower
Enter compressor delivered SCFM at the relevant PSI and the tool’s air consumption at load. “Average” tool consumption can understate demand during trigger-on time. Tank gallons influence burst duration, not the compressor’s sustainable output.

Where to find trustworthy inputs
Compressor
Use delivered SCFM/FAD at a stated pressure from the manufacturer’s data, not pump displacement. If rating pressure is below the tool requirement, treat the comparison as unresolved.
Tool
Prefer “air consumption at load” or continuous consumption. Record inlet pressure and minimum hose ID from the exact model manual.
System
Measure at the tool while flowing. A regulator, loaded filter, small coupler or long hose can make nominal compressor capacity unavailable.
Example
A tool listed at 17 CFM at load compared with a compressor delivering 10 SCFM at 90 PSI is not a sustained match. A tank may support short impacts, but pressure falls until the compressor restores stored air. The user must evaluate cycle length and recovery.
Compatibility evidence chain
If any input is missing, the correct result is insufficient data—not an estimate based on horsepower or tank gallons.
Assumptions and limitations
- The sustained screen uses simultaneous loaded demand × 1.20 as a planning margin.
- Duty-adjusted demand is shown for context; intermittent air storage is not calculated because receiver pressure band, temperature, control behavior and actual trigger cycle are required.
- No numerical hose pressure-drop estimate is invented. Unknown or restrictive distribution downgrades confidence.
- SCFM conventions and test conditions can vary; use comparable standards and current manufacturer documents.
- This is not an engineered compressed-air design, safety certification or guarantee of tool performance.
