Do not rank tools from a single headline number. “Average air consumption” can assume intermittent use; loaded or continuous consumption is the safer compressor-sizing input for sustained work. Values differ by exact model and revision.

Compressor, hose and air-quality check
A sander that fades after several seconds may outrun compressor output or lose pressure through hose, fittings or treatment equipment. Measure dynamic inlet pressure; vacuum demand is a separate system load.
- Use delivered compressor CFM at the same stated pressure as the tool—not tank gallons, displacement or horsepower alone.
- Add tools that can run simultaneously and account for the real work cycle. Preserve capacity margin for sustained work.
- Confirm minimum hose inside diameter, total run length, coupler bore, regulator and filter capacity.
- Measure pressure at the tool inlet while it is operating. A static gauge can look correct while flow restriction causes a large drop.
- Drain moisture and follow the exact maker’s filtration and lubrication instructions.
Safety and stop-work limits
Dust may be combustible or toxic depending on coating and substrate. Identify the material and apply suitable extraction, respiratory controls and housekeeping.
- Inspect pad, backing and abrasive attachment before air connection.
- Keep clothing and hair clear of moving parts.
- Do not sand unknown coatings without a hazard assessment.
